Project summary:

The project "Urban greening for healthy breathing" will provide environmental, economic and social benefits in the cross-border region of Kyustendil - Kumanovo by introducing of nature-friendly solutions, that helps us understand the value that nature provides to human society and mobilize investments to maintain and increase these benefits. In other words, the green infrastructure that is set to be implemented under the project will provide sustainable ecosystem services that will contribute to human well-being and quality of life.

Project investment activities in Municipality of Kyustendil include: restoration and rehabilitation of two green urban areas in city of Kyustendil. 

- Renovation of the "Ezerata" eco park, including construction of ecologically clean exhibition areas for educational purposes, creation of a botanical avenue and landscaping;

- Improvement of a recreation area in the central part of the city of Kyustendil between the streets "Dimitar Peshev", "Konstantinova Banya" and "Khan Asparuh",

Project investment activities in Municipality of Kumanovo include: Improvement, renovation and landscaping of 5 green urban areas in Kumanovo: 

1) Boulevard Oktomvriska Revolucija – a total of 330 trees will be planted on the 2 km and Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS)  so called Rain Gardens will be constructed

2) Treta Makedonska Udarna Brigada – planted 180 trees on 1 km 

3) Development of urban green area and community garden in the Secondary Economic School “Pero Nakov” Kumanovo

4) Marshal Tito square near the SUMA trade center is envisaged development of steel railing with greenery

5) Greenery in the Professor Mijalkovic school yard 

Joint strategy for green infrastructure for Northeast region of North Macedonia and Kyustendil municipality will be developed aiming to cover, develop and test new solutions and to address the problems of protection and preservation of nature, biodiversity, and green infrastructure in both regions.

Joint green action plan will also be developed for Municipalities of Kyustendil and Kumanovo, which will ensure improvement of the quality of living conditions through its urbanistic, landscape- ecological and recreational-aesthetic functions, while connecting the urban areas of the cities and their elements with the surrounding natural environment.
