The first 8 projects, with a total value of 7.7 million euros, have been approved under Priority 3, “Integrated Development of the Cross-Border Region,” of the INTERREG VI-A IPA Bulgaria – North Macedonia 2021-2027 Programme. This marks the beginning of the practical implementation of the integrated Territorial Strategy under the Programme, specifically aiming at the development of an attractive, all-season tourism product through smart solutions.

What’s New?

These projects represent the first tangible steps toward the realization of the Territorial Strategy and are characterized by their integrated nature. They bring together representatives from various social and economic sectors and encourage closer partnerships between local authorities, businesses, and civil society organizations in both countries.

A key focus of the Territorial Strategy is fostering stronger and more engaged local participation, where communities themselves prioritize and determine investments that meet their specific needs. These projects not only emphasize collaboration but also aim to unite efforts for greater sustainability, innovation, and competitiveness in the region.

The projects address critical areas such as improving mobility and connectivity, branding and marketing of cross-border tourism products, and strengthening the links between cultural and natural resources and the environment. Additionally, actions are planned to reduce the vulnerability of tourism services, which is a vital step toward stabilizing the sector.

The anticipated results include modernized infrastructure, improved accessibility, and expanded tourism services, contributing to transforming the region into a year-round tourist destination. Investments are aimed at fostering economic growth by creating new jobs, encouraging innovation, and promoting the sustainable use of natural and cultural resources.

What’s Next?

In 2025, under the integrated territorial strategy of the INTERREG VI-A IPA Bulgaria – North Macedonia 2021-2027 Programme, a call for applications will be launched for micro, small, and medium enterprises. The aim is to support technological modernization initiatives that will make businesses greener, more digital, and more competitive. Additionally, the focus will be on acquiring new knowledge and skills, developing new products, and improving market access through marketing, entrepreneurship, and internationalization.

The approved projects and upcoming initiatives are ambitious in their goal to establish the cross-border region as a model of successful cooperation and sustainable development.
