Regional consultations were held in Blagoevgrad and Kyustendil, dedicated to the preparation of the new European Territorial Cooperation programs for the period 2028–2034. The meetings were attended by representatives of municipal and state administrations, non-governmental organizations, businesses and educational institutions, who discussed the opportunities and priorities for the future development of cross-border cooperation.
The meetings provided an opportunity for participants to get acquainted with the initial ideas and guidelines for the future programming period, as well as to share their views and proposals for joint initiatives and projects in cross-border regions.
The preparation of the new period 2028–2034 is taking place in the context of the changing European framework for territorial development, which places greater emphasis on clearly formulated objectives, measurable results and real impact of cooperation between regions.
During the consultations, the main challenges facing the INTERREG VI-A IPA Bulgaria - North Macedonia program were also discussed. Among them, the participants pointed out the complex program rules, the administrative burden and bureaucratic procedures, as well as the need for greater financial resources, despite the increase in the budget during the current programming period.
Among the main areas where investments are expected to be directed during the period 2028-2034 are:
development of sustainable tourism;
increasing the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises in the border region;
investments in environmental protection and waste management.
During the discussions, significant interest was also noted in the priority related to dealing with disasters and crises, including prevention and response to fires, floods and other natural disasters, which are increasingly affecting the border region.
The health and education sectors were also mentioned as new potential areas for cooperation with North Macedonia.
The opinions and proposals collected within the framework of the regional consultations will be taken into account in the formation of the priorities and strategic directions of the future European Territorial Cooperation programmes.
Bulgaria is expected to continue its participation in a total of 12 INTERREG programmes in the next programming period.
